U1W1 written response: Based on the information in the passage from the selection Red Kayak, write a short description of what the narrator, Brady, is like. Think about what his words and actions tell you about him. Introduce the topic and then develop it using 3 different details from the text. Conclude with a sentence that sums up the description. Be sure to check your writing for correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling and correct any errors in grammar.
Red Kayak
by Priscilla Cummings
Up the creek, a couple private docks extended out into the water; then there was a long strip of riprap near a construction site. From that point on, it was just shoreline with trees and a lot of brown cell bush. I kept going, but toward the head of the creek, a marsh taken over by a patch of tall phragmites warned me of shallow water, and I turned the boat around, not wanting to run aground. I sped up and came back down the creek, closer to the opposite bank.
Still no sign of a red kayak or a yellow life jacket. All I wanted to do was open the throttle and head downriver to where the others were searching. My hands ached they were so cold. I stuffed one hand in the pocket and hit the cell phone. I pulled it out and saw that I had "1 missed call." Turning off the motor so I could hear, I speed-dialed home to see if Mom knew anything.
"Brady—hi!" she said. "Dad called. He said they found Mrs. DiAngelo."
"They did?"
"Yes. Downriver, near Spaniard's Neck."
"Is she okay?" I asked.
"She's alive," Mom said. "But just barely. They have not found Ben."
"They didn't?"
"No. They lost the kayak, Brady. So Ben is out there somewhere in the water in his life jacket."
"Oh, man, it's cold Mom—"
"I know . . . I know it's cold. Are you all right? Can you do this, Brady?"
"I'm all right. I'm fine," I assured her. "I need to keep looking!"
I ended the call and put the phone back in my pocket. We had to move really fast now. If Ben was in the water, his time was limited.
Tilly started barking as I picked up speed.
"Quiet!" I hollered.

Ideas from Experts:
Looking at the chain reactions that other people have built will give you ideas for your own chain reaction. There are many chain reactions online. MANY EXTRA POINTS GIVEN IF YOU MAKE A CHAIN REACTION AT HOME (the longer the better!). Watch videos below to get ideas,
Joseph Herscher uses ramps, rolling marbles, and everyday objects in a chain reaction designed to smash a chocolate egg. https://safeyoutube.net/w/np1b

Due:
1. complete the table with the score you deserve for each of the 6 writing traits and the explanation of why you deserve that score. You need to provide examples from your writing to prove why you deserve that score. Cite evidence from your writing. You can write..."For example in paragraph one, I wrote ........and this shows......"
2. Copy and paste your adventure story below the table (at the end of the document so I can see it and check your examples in your writing).
First evaluate your writing for Focus/Ideas. Read the description for 4, 3, 2, and 1. Then read your adventure story and ask yourself these questions:
Have I clearly explained the quest?
Do all the events in the plot focus on the quest?
These scores will help show you where you can improve your writing in the future.
Then do the same for the other 5 traits. You may get different scores for the different traits. That is OK. Lower or higher scores can help you see where your strengths lie and where you need improvement.
Use this to set goals and a plan for improving your future writing pieces.

The more details and the more correct, appropriate scientific terms used, the better your grade.
In the drawing below:
Think of all the places energy is stored.
Think of all of the places energy is released.
Think of all of the places there is a high starting point.
You must put together in your brain everything we learned last week and this week in science.
I added videos below to help you better explain and use scientific terms. Take notes for you to remember to use in the answer of the questions.
